Before dawn on the morning of June 4 , the Batavia, a ship of the Dutch East India Company, struck a reef at the Abrolhos Islands, some 70 kilometres off the Western Australian coast. More than seven months earlier the ship had left the Netherlands to make its way to the city of Batavia present-day Jakarta , carrying silver, gold and jewels and passengers and crew. During the shipwreck, 40 of them drowned. The others found safety on a nearby island.

On an island off the coast of Western Australia, archaeologists have found a mass grave associated with a shipwreck so nightmarishly gruesome, it makes Lord of the Flies look tame. The grave contains remains of five passengers on the Batavia , a flagship of the Dutch East India Company that sank in on its maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Java.

The bodies, interred neatly in a row and showing no signs of violence, likely died soon after the wreck of dehydration—before madness set in among some of the survivors.

Signs of this brutality abound in other gravesites excavated by archaeologists. One such skeleton belongs to a man missing the top of his skull from a sword blow. His body was unceremoniously dragged into its final resting place. Unlike many victims of the Batavia wreck, the most recent mass grave discovery contained orderly burials with no signs of associated violence.

Thanks to horrendous luck, it took him three months to return with help. In all, some people died following the shipwreck, many of whom were slain. The mass grave findings on Beacon Island, though tragic, offer a rare scientific luxury. Because Pelsaert published his journals after the incident, archaeologists can compare their findings with a detailed historical account. In the late s, fishermen on Beacon Island were digging a drain from their bathroom when they stumbled across human bones.

In archaeologists began excavating the site, which contained the bodies of three adults, a teenager, a child, and an infant. In the years since, archaeologists have kept up the hunt for new gravesites. Archaeologists hope than further analysis of the year-old victims of the Batavia wreck and subsequent mutiny will shed new light on the ship's passengers.

Green says that this cosmopolitan crew came with the times. Joining the Dutch East India Company came with risks; only one of three Europeans who made the trip ever returned. But as the conflicts of the age dispossessed many, some saw the Batavia as a way out. Study of these decidedly unlucky passengers continues. Green says that the team will publish scholarly articles on their findings next year—illuminating with the light of science an atrocity that played out nearly four centuries ago.

Archaeologists Discover New Mass Grave From Notorious Shipwreck While other passengers of the Batavia were chucked overboard or beheaded, victims from the latest discovery met a gentler fate. By Michael Greshko.

Book Review: Batavia’s Graveyard

Built in Amsterdam in , the ship sailed on her maiden voyage for Batavia , capital of the Dutch East Indies. Batavia wrecked on the Houtman Abrolhos off the coastal regions of Western Australia. A mutiny amongst the survivors led to a massacre. It sailed under commander and senior merchant Francisco Pelsaert , with Ariaen Jacobsz serving as skipper. Pelsaert and Jacobsz had previously encountered each other in Dutch Suratte , when Pelsaert publicly dressed-down Jacobsz after he became drunk and insulted Pelsaert in front of other merchants. Animosity existed between the two men after this incident. During the voyage, Jacobsz and Cornelisz conceived a plan to take the ship, which would allow them to start a new life elsewhere, using the huge supply of trade gold and silver on board.
