I don't think she destroyed the English language, although the text certainly takes quite a lot of liberties with the language, but that's nothing new. Shakespeare, anyone? What I think she has destroyed is the conventional structure and format of the play.

It's very strange - it's as though she took the organism of a conventional play, took into her two hands, and cracked into two, showing us all the marrow dripping from the broken ends of bones, the organs still obliviously pumping away, the heave of entrails I suppose there are two sorts of strange when it comes to theatre.

The first kind is the poorly-executed sort, it's reaching for artistic greatness but has nothing substantive to say so it's "sound and fury signifying nothing". The second kind, is well, there is no cohesive self-contained account to describe what these kinds are. I think the characters might have moments where they have been pushed a bit too far into caricature, but for the most part, when I was reading the play, I felt a new rhythm take its place in my head, giving me a more direct access to something.

And that's a sign that a play is doing something important for me. Jul 22, kasia rated it it was amazing. Bizarre and somewhat disturbing but what can I say, I'm a sucker for Maslowska's style. Yes, it's crude, vulgar, and somewhat appalling, and much like Wojna polsko-ruska is really about a bunch of fucked up drugged up youths and not much else, but it's also hilarious, and marvelously rendered. And there is something really fascinating about her twisted capitalist apocalyptica that really fascinates me.

Also, there are some interesting experiments with genre and narrative time - this work, for in Bizarre and somewhat disturbing but what can I say, I'm a sucker for Maslowska's style. Also, there are some interesting experiments with genre and narrative time - this work, for instance, is a play, sort of, but occasionally the characters are speaking to each other across time. It's kind of fascinating.

Readers also enjoyed. Largely controversial, mostly because of the language seen by many as vulgar, cynical and simple, the book was praised by many intellectuals as innovative and fresh.
