One of the most widely quoted sources of information about Hitler's personality and secret intentions is the supposed memoir of Hermann Rauschning, the National Socialist President of the Danzig Senate in who was ousted from the Hitler movement a short time later and then made a new life for himself as a professional anti-Nazi. After the war the memoir was introduced as Allied prosecution exhibit USSR at the main Nuremberg "war crimes" trial. We must be brutal. We must regain a clear conscience about brutality. Only then can we drive out the tenderness from our people Do I propose to exterminate entire nationalities?

It was during these years that Nazism spread and Hitler seized and consolidated his power. It also had him envisaging a Nazi world empire that would control an African dominion, establish hegemony in Latin America, specifically Mexico and Brazil, and eventually incorporate the United States. Although there was some question about its accuracy because of the verbatim quotations, Rauschning was given the benefit of the doubt. His research, Haenel says, includes correspondence with Rauschning, who died in Portland, Ore.

Hermann Rauschning 7 August — February 8, was a German conservative reactionary  who briefly joined the Nazi movement before breaking with it. In , he renounced Nazi Party membership and in emigrated from Germany. He eventually settled in the United States and began openly denouncing Nazism. He attended the Prussian Cadet Corps institute at Potsdam and in , he obtained a doctorate from Berlin University. He fought in World War I as a lieutenant  and was wounded in action. According to Rauschning, Germans in those areas were constantly put under pressure to leave Poland. Previously affiliated with the German National People's Party , he then joined the Nazi Party as he believed it to offer the only way out of Germany's troubles, including the return of Danzig to Germany.

He attended army cadet schools in Potsdam and Berlin and during the First World War he served on the Western Front and reached the rank of lieutenant before being wounded in action. After the war he lived in Posen. A wealthy landowner he moved to to a new estate in Warnow and became leader of the Danzig Land League. Two months later he was invited to Hitler's home: "Hitler is not physically attractive A receding forehead, with the lank hair falling over it; a short, unimposing stature, with limbs somehow ill-fitting and awkward; an expressionless mouth beneath the little brush of a moustache - such are the traits of the outer man.
