There is a perception that if you believe hard enough, God will "snap His fingers" and make all of your sorrow, doubt, and struggles go away. Many of the professing Christians who claim this are the same people who claim that, if you do struggle in the aforementioned ways, you are bankrupt in the knowledge of God's love or don't have enough faith. This doctrine is detrimental to the modern church and, most importantly, contrary to what the Bible actually teaches Matthew ; 2 Corinthians ; Romans This marvelous book displays that the Christian's life is, in fact, one of sorrow and suffering.
We see the main character constantly doubting herself, sometimes overcoming and sometimes falling into temptation, questioning if her Shepherd really knows what is best for her life, finding the road to the High Places long and difficult, and gradually transforming into someone more beautiful and capable throughout the story.
God is omnipotent and more than capable of "snapping His fingers" to make our difficulties vanish Without those seasons, we would not be able to develop in the ways that make us fit for the High Places.
There is beauty in the struggle. One of my favorite lines from the book is the following: "You may think that Much-Afraid was altogether too much given to shedding tears, but remember that she had Sorrow for a companion and teacher. There is this to be added, that her tears were all in secret, for no one but her enemies knew about this strange journey on which she had set out. The heart knoweth its own sorrow and there are times when, like David, it is comforting to think that our tears are put in a bottle and not one of them forgotten by the one who leads us in paths of sorrow.
God may just use it to bring you comfort as He reveals that you are closer to your Shepherd than you know. This is a great read for everyone, but particularly those brothers and sisters in Christ who are well-acquainted with sorrow and suffering. This is a wonderful story that is told in such a way that it reminded me of "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan.
It is read by Nadia May, who brings the story even more to life. I learned that this was one of Keiths' favorite stories, and now I can see why. Just like "The Pilgrim's Progress", by John Bunyan, Hannah tells a story of a Christians journey to the high place and the struggles that happen along the way. I recommend this book both to young and old, I am 53 yrs.
That is why I gave it 5 stars and I believe you won't regret buying this book God bless, Brother Albert. Changed my view on myself and God. I don't normally gravitate towards fictional stories, but I was recommended this book by a dear friend. And wow, this book has totally transformed my faith! Such an amazing story of Jesus' unconditional love for us; this book puts it in a whole new perspective.
As someone who has struggled with chronic fear and anxiety, I relate so much to the main character, Much-Afraid, and the thoughts and fears she has. This is one of my new favorite books, if not the best Christian book I've ever read. If you struggle with fear at all, please read this book!! IF, and that is a very big IF, you are in the right place, this book will speak to you on so many levels.
I have read it about 5 or 6 different times in my life - in for the first time, then had my 7th and 8th grade Sunday School students use this instead of their "assigned" books each kid "got it" and almost never missed coming to Sunday School!
I read it again many years later as a mommy to 5 year-old and 10 year-old girls during Lent. The 5 year old recognized her pride-fulness She is 21 now and recently expressed her fondness for this book. If you purchase this and it does not resonate with you, may I suggest you place in on the shelf not too far away or out of sight and come back to it again another time? I find it helpful when I am fighting with myself and wanting my own way This is on my top 5 list for favorite books.
I bought it as a gift for a friend who is struggling with depression because this book so greatly helped my spiritual walk. If you are having difficulty accepting your past pains, I highly recommend this book. It helped me to put my life in a whole new perspective and by the end of reading it, I am now able to be "Acceptance with Joy!
